You will find us in beautiful Skillingmark in the village’s old school. Here we run a summer and weekend café with homemade baking and pizza and many fun events.

Skillingmark is a long valley in western Värmland with rolling meadows bordered by high forest-clad mountains. In the middle of the valley flows a lake system with clear water, exciting islands and fine beaches.

Here you will find some of the country’s finest canoe routes, cycle paths and hiking trails gathered in the same scenic area.

Hike, paddle, cycle, play golf and go skiing

In the Skillingmark valley we have some of the country’s finest canoe routes, cycle paths and hiking trails gathered in the same scenic area.

Our facility in the middle of the Skillingmark valley has the best location as a destination and starting point for hiking tours.

  • We have three excellent hiking trails in the immediate vicinity: the Pilgrim Trail, the Church Trail and the Refugee Route, which crosses the border into Norway. All with fantastically beautiful nature and interesting history.
  • There are also several nature reserves with untouched forest, mountain nature and fine wildlife, such as Gullrosa Mountain and Kronofjället, within walking distance. Contact us for more information.

  • Within walking distance there are several beaches with fine sandy bottoms, pontoons and shoreline.

Skillingmark and Skillingsfors

The Skillingmark area lies in north-western Värmland a few miles east of Oslo and follows the Skillingmark valley lake system from Koppom-Järnskog north to the Norwegian border. The nearest town is Arvika and the main centre, 25 km to the east, is Charlottenberg in Eda municipality, known for its fine ski facilities: Valfjället, Köla ski stadium and Sagesätra, as well as a large shopping centre for cross-border trade.

The Skillingmark valley is 30 km long with an open landscape and a lake system framed by high forest-clad mountains.  The area is known for fine paddling, cycling and hiking trails. The cycle route follows the old Pilgrim Trail along the lakes and runs long stretches on the old railway embankment, about 50 km, to Arvika. 

A hundred years ago the area was called Sweden’s equivalent of Switzerland for its beautiful landscape, friendly people, fresh water and clear air. There were several inns for visitors and even a railway connection.

 

Most things, except the railway, remain and are much the same today. The people of the Skillingmark valley are very proud of their region and used to cooperating and being helpful to everyone who comes here. This is called the Skillingmark spirit. Thanks to that pride and spirit of cooperation, businesses and the community thrive here.

There is a well-stocked Coop store with petrol station, pharmacy agent and Systembolaget agent. The area also has many active associations such as sports, fishing, shooting and heritage societies and more, plus a large campsite with restaurant.

There is also an old-fashioned real folk park for dancing and a popular church for the spiritual.

The old school’s garden, where we have Gunnerud Garden Café, is located at Skillingsfors, very beautifully, down towards Lake Björklången. There is plenty of space for visitors and campers. Overnight accommodation can be arranged both indoors and outdoors.

 

About us

My business, Skillingmarks Lodging & Conference with Gunnerud Garden Café, was started by me, Wenche Nesset, as a hobby activity during the summer of 2025. A few months earlier I had been given the opportunity to buy the area’s old school, where I myself had once been a pupil. I immediately felt that the school’s fine location and premises were perfect for café, event and conference activities. There is also a large gym hall, a well-equipped school kitchen and a crafts classroom for various activities and crafts.

We like to come up with ideas and organise gatherings and events. Do not hesitate to contact us with your ideas and thoughts. We always provide written proposals with programmes and prices before bookings.
